(OLNEY) As a cold front moves thru the midwest, we'll have a chance of shower & thunderstorm activity now thru tomorrow night with maybe some severe conditions tonight - then look for a dry & partly sunny sky on tap for the end of the work week on Thursday & Friday - stay tuned for weather updates.
(NEWTON) Mostly dry weather conditions last week allowed statewide farmers to finish up planting & some of the area wheat harvest - here in the 10 county region surrounding Newton/Olney, farmers report 90% of the wheat has been cut with mostly good test weights & the average yield between 55-70 bushels of wheat - in some cases, around 80 bushels to the acre - many are finishing their bean planting as well.
(OLNEY) The 2008 Richland County Fair has crowned a new fair queen - she's Miss Katie Weber, the daughter of Larry & Paula Weber of Olney - Katie will take over the duties of retiring Queen, Jenna Cazel who did a fantastic job of representing Richland County over the past year, finishing among the top 12 at this year's Miss Illinois County Fair Queen Pageant back in January - also last night, the 1st runner-up is Micah Georges, the 2nd runner-up is Sarah Ruesch, & selected as Miss Congeniality, Michelle Scherer - it was another job well done by the Pageant Committee & a "thank you" to all who assisted this year.
(OLNEY) Meanwhile, the Richland County Fair continues in the Olney City Park - it's the Talent Contest tonight at 7:00 with plenty of 4-H livestock judging today & tomorrow - the Pickup Truck Tug-of-War is tomorrow night, then the 4-H Livestock Auction on Thursday afternoon - all in the Olney City Park.
(NEWTON) The 2008 Jasper County Honey Do "Work Week" continues today & volunteer workers can still help out - during the "Work Week", today thru Friday, breakfast & lunch will be provided & all types of jobs are available at different skill levels - anyone who can give a day, maybe two, or the entire week, can call the Grace United Methodist Church at 783-3336 - again, that's this week in Jasper County.
(OLNEY) Signups continue : at ERBA offices for the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program to assist those who qualify for funds to offset cooling expenses - applications are being taken at ERBA sites in Olney, Newton, Lawrenceville, Robinson, Greenup, & others to the north : for those affected by recent flooding, call FEMA & its toll-free registration/helpline at 800-621-3362 or check the agency's website at www.fema.gov - homeowners, renters, & businesses in the area counties of Jasper, Crawford, Clark, Lawrence, Cumberland, Coles, & Edgar - folks can also stop by the Disaster Recovery Center, located at the Parkview Junior High School in Lawrenceville, open seven days a week, from 9:00am til 7:00pm.
(NEWTON) The Jasper County Health Department is now providing school physicals, by appointment only, this month & next, for only $10 - immunizations can also be scheduled at an additional cost - parents are reminded that children entering Pre-Kindergarten, Kindergarten, 6th grade, & 9th grade must have a physical dated within one year before the first day of school - call the Department for details.
(OLNEY) The Richland County Soil & Water Conservation District will have a pond demonstration two weeks from today on July 22nd at the Tony & Jane Zwilling residence, along the Ste. Marie Road, near the Dundas Lane intersection - topics covered include pond stocking & management, fish harvesting, weed control, & more, plus information will be available for those planning to build a pond - call the SWCD office in Olney to register by July 15th, a week from today - all are invited to the free event.
(NEWTON) The State has announced the entertainment lineup for this year's Du Quoin State Fair - there will be plenty of car & truck racing, harness racing, & motorcycle races - there will be performances by Kellie Pickler, Sawyer Brown, P.O.D., Sevendust, Corbin Bleu, & Justin Stein - for more information, go online at www.agr.state.il.us/dq - the Du Quoin State Fair runs August 22nd thru September 1st.

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Richland County is selling fundraising raffle tickets at $10 each - prizes are $3,000 in cash, an HDTV, & a 4-wheeler - drawing is this Saturday, the 12th - tickets on sale at the fair
The OCC Radiography Program has a fundraising porkburger sale this Saturday at Buehler's BuyLow in Olney, with serving from 10:30 til 2:00 - proceeds help students attend a national conference
A Parkersburg Chowder meeting will be held this Thursday night, starting at 7:00, at the Community Building in Parkersburg - it's the final meeting for the annual event scheduled for July 26th
